WeChat Pay Reseña 2026
Payments inside China's messaging app
Nuestro veredicto
WeChat Pay (Weixin Pay) is the payment service inside Tencent’s WeChat app, and in mainland China it is one of the main ways to pay, in shops, mini programs, taxis and trains, usually by scanning a QR code. For travellers it has become far more usable: you can register with a non-Chinese phone number and link a Visa, Mastercard, American Express, JCB, Diners Club or Discover card issued outside the mainland.
It is still a China-focused tool with its own fee rule and limits for foreign cards. Below we explain what it costs a visitor, in yuan and in pounds, euros and dollars, what you can and cannot do with a foreign card, and how to keep fees down, using WeChat Pay’s user manual and Tencent’s official announcements.
WeChat Pay for visitors at a glance (2026)
| With a foreign card | |
|---|---|
| Cards you can link | Visa, Mastercard, American Express, JCB, Diners Club, Discover and UnionPay international cards issued outside mainland China |
| Phone number | Any country code; Tencent says numbers other than +86 can register |
| Fee per payment | Free up to CNY 200; above CNY 200, 3% of the whole payment |
| Exchange rate | Set by your card network and the bank that issued your card |
| Limits without uploading ID | CNY 3,000 per payment, CNY 15,000 a year |
| Limits after identity verification | CNY 35,000 per payment and per day, CNY 350,000 a year |
| What you can pay | WeChat Pay merchants and individuals collecting payment face to face, including mini programs, taxis and trains |
| What you cannot do | Red packets, transfers to other users, balance top-ups or withdrawals |
From the WeChat Pay user manual (bank cards section, updated 12 June 2026). Your card issuer may add its own foreign-transaction fee.
What WeChat Pay costs with a foreign card
WeChat Pay’s fee rule for international cards is simple: payments of CNY 200 or less carry no fee; above CNY 200 the fee is 3% of the whole payment, not just the part above 200. If a payment is refunded, the fee is refunded in proportion. The exchange rate is not WeChat’s: your card network and your bank convert the yuan, and your bank may add its own foreign-transaction fee on top.
Tencent has also run fee waivers for first-time card linkers, most recently described as 90 consecutive days covering up to RMB 1,000 a day. Treat these as promotions that may change; the 3% rule is the standard one.
Worked examples
| Payment | WeChat Pay fee | In pounds / euros / dollars |
|---|---|---|
| CNY 150 taxi ride | CNY 0 | About £16.94 / €20.22 / $22.50, no WeChat fee |
| CNY 800 hotel night | 3% = CNY 24 | Fee about £2.71 / €3.24 / $3.60 on a payment of about £90 / €108 / $120 |
| CNY 3,000 week, as 15 payments of CNY 200 | CNY 0 | No WeChat fee on about £339 / €404 / $450 |
| CNY 3,000 week, as 4 payments of CNY 750 | 3% = CNY 90 | Fee about £10.16 / €12.13 / $13.50 |
Converted at the mid-market rates on our check date (CNY 8.86 per £1, 7.42 per €1, 6.67 per $1). Your bank’s rate and any foreign-transaction fee come on top.
The practical lesson: small payments are free, so WeChat Pay is ideal for meals, taxis, metro tickets and shopping. For a hotel bill or anything above CNY 200, paying with your card directly, if the merchant accepts it, can avoid the 3%.
Limits and identity verification
Without uploading any ID, a foreign card can pay up to CNY 3,000 at a time and CNY 15,000 in a year. WeChat Pay says these caps are set because regulators require them. Once you complete identity verification with a passport, Mainland Travel Permit, residence permit or Foreign Permanent Resident ID Card, the limits rise to CNY 35,000 per payment and per day and CNY 350,000 a year. WeChat Pay says limits cannot currently be raised manually.
When you link a card, your bank may see a small pre-authorisation, which WeChat Pay says is returned within 30 days.
What visitors can and cannot do
- You can pay WeChat Pay merchants, individuals who collect payment face to face, mini programs and services such as taxis and trains.
- You cannot send or receive red packets, transfer money to other WeChat users, top up the WeChat balance or withdraw from it with a foreign card. Using the balance requires uploading passport photos and further identity checks.
- WeChat Pay HK is a separate Hong Kong dollar e-wallet for Hong Kong users; mainland visitors use the regular WeChat Pay.
Sending money to someone in China
WeChat Pay itself is not a way for visitors to send money into China, but Tencent’s Tenpay Global works with remittance partners that can pay into a recipient’s Weixin Pay balance or linked bank account. Tencent has named partners such as Western Union (up to USD 5,000 per transaction), Xoom and others, and says remittances to Weixin Pay are supported from over 100 countries and regions. Compare the amount received with a specialist transfer service before sending.
For mainland residents using the balance, withdrawing to a bank card costs 0.1% above a lifetime free amount of CNY 1,000, with a minimum fee of CNY 0.01.
Who runs WeChat Pay and is it safe?
WeChat Pay is operated by Tenpay Payment Technology Co., Ltd., which holds a payment licence from the People’s Bank of China (licence Z2000444000013, renewed in April 2026). For a visitor, the money stays on your own card: WeChat Pay charges the linked card for each payment, so your card issuer’s protections apply to the card account.
Our verdict on WeChat Pay
| Use case | Rating | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Everyday payments in mainland China | Excellent | Widely used by mainland merchants; free up to CNY 200 per payment. |
| Larger payments with a foreign card | Fair | 3% of the whole payment above CNY 200, plus your bank’s FX. |
| Paying friends or splitting bills | Not available | Transfers and red packets are blocked for foreign cards. |
| Use outside China | Limited | Built for mainland merchants; WeChat Pay HK is a separate HKD wallet. |
For a trip to mainland China, WeChat Pay is close to essential, and setting it up with a foreign card is now straightforward. Link a card with no foreign-transaction fee, keep payments at CNY 200 or below where you can, and verify your passport if you expect to spend more than CNY 15,000 in a year. Consider setting up Alipay as a backup.

WeChat Pay is integrated directly into the chat app, so I can send red packets to friends and pay for my groceries without switching apps. Perfect.
The QR code scanning is instant. Used it all over Shanghai. It works seamlessly and foreign credit card linkage is supported now.
Extremely convenient in China. The only thing is that setting it up as an international traveler is slightly more complex than Alipay.
