Nuestro veredicto
bunq is a Dutch bank with a full banking licence from De Nederlandsche Bank, which means eligible deposits are protected up to €100,000. It is built for people who live, work or travel across Europe: you can open local IBANs from seven EU countries, hold several currencies and choose between a free plan and three paid ones.
The plans matter more at bunq than at most banks, because the free plan has limits on cards, foreign-currency spending and cash. We went through bunq’s fee information (dated 15 October 2026) and worked out what typical payments cost on each plan.

Worked examples
Euro amounts at the mid-market rate on our check date; bunq uses the Mastercard rate for card payments and the Currencycloud rate for in-app exchange, each plus its 0.5% charge.
1. Paying $500 in the US with a bunq card
| Plan | bunq charge on about €449 |
|---|---|
| Free, within the €1,000 yearly allowance | 0.5%: about €2.25 |
| Free, after the allowance is used | 1.5%: about €6.74 |
| Core, Pro or Elite | 0.5%: about €2.25, any amount |
bunq’s fee document says the Free plan’s 0.5% applies to €1,000 per year and that “after that, the fee is 1.5% of the transaction amount”.
2. Taking out €300 in cash in a month (one withdrawal)
Free: €2.99. Core: €0.99. Pro or Elite: €0, as one of the six free withdrawals. If the cash is in another currency, bunq adds its 0.5% conversion charge, so €1.50 on €300.
3. Converting €1,000 into pounds in the app
On every plan, bunq charges 0.5% on top of the Currencycloud rate, so €5.00. For comparison, Wise charged €5.31 to convert €1,000 from a Wise balance and send it to a UK account on our check date, at the mid-market rate. The two are close; the deciding factor is the exchange rate each one applies on the day.
4. Is a paid plan worth it?
Core (€3.99) mainly removes the Free plan’s €1,000-a-year cap on 0.5% card FX and includes one card instead of a virtual card only. Once the Free allowance is used up, every €400 of foreign card spending costs about €4 more on Free (1.5%) than on Core (0.5%), roughly the price of a month of Core. Pro (€9.99) makes sense if you withdraw cash several times a month, want extra foreign IBANs or need more cards.
Multi-currency and local IBANs
bunq offers euro IBANs from the Netherlands, Germany, France, Spain, Belgium, Italy and Ireland. That helps if an employer, landlord or tax office in one of those countries prefers a local IBAN. Pro and Elite can open extra foreign IBANs for free. Note that Italian IBANs carry the Italian stamp duty: €0 if the average yearly balance is below €5,000 and €34.20 a year above it.
You can also open accounts in other currencies, such as US dollars, pounds, Swiss francs and Polish zloty, at no charge on any plan; bunq refers to around 20 currencies. Exchanging between them costs 0.5% on top of the Currencycloud rate. International transfers can be made through bunq’s Wise integration, which bunq says uses the real exchange rate, or by SWIFT for €5.
Who bunq is for
- People living in the EU who want a bank account with deposit protection, local IBANs and multi-currency accounts in one app.
- Digital nomads and frequent travellers on Pro or Elite, who get free withdrawals and unlimited 0.5% card FX.
- Less suited: people who want a completely free everyday account with a physical card (the Free plan has only a virtual card and €2.99 per ATM withdrawal), UK residents (new UK sign-ups are paused) and US residents (bunq has applied for a US banking licence but has not launched).
- Less suited: anyone who pays mostly in euros and rarely travels; a free local bank account may be simpler.
Where you can open bunq
bunq’s help centre lists residents of 27 EU countries: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czechia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain and Sweden. Its general terms list a slightly shorter set, so check bunq’s current list if you live in Latvia, Lithuania or Poland.
Opening new bunq accounts from the UK is paused; existing UK users can keep using their accounts. In January 2026 bunq announced it had filed for a US banking licence and will launch in the US only after approval.
Is bunq safe?
bunq B.V. holds a banking licence issued by De Nederlandsche Bank, and deposits are guaranteed up to €100,000 per account holder under the Dutch deposit guarantee scheme. That is the same level of protection as any EU bank, and stronger than e-money apps whose customer money is safeguarded but not deposit-insured.
Our verdict on bunq
| Use case | Rating | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Card spending abroad | Good (paid plans) | 0.5% over the Mastercard rate; Free plan rises to 1.5% after €1,000 a year. |
| Cash | Weak on Free, good on Pro | €2.99 per withdrawal on Free; 6 free a month on Pro and Elite. |
| Local IBANs across the EU | Excellent | IBANs from 7 countries; extra IBANs free on Pro and Elite. |
| Holding several currencies | Good | Free currency accounts; 0.5% to exchange. |
| Safety | Excellent | Dutch bank with €100,000 deposit guarantee. |
bunq is one of the most complete EU banking apps for people with a cross-border life: real deposit protection, local IBANs in seven countries and multi-currency accounts. Its costs depend heavily on the plan. For occasional use, Free works if you rarely withdraw cash; for travel, Core removes the yearly FX cap, and Pro is the plan that makes bunq a strong travel and nomad account.

Outstanding features and design. The only issue is that the monthly subscription is quite high compared to other neobanks.
Very innovative app, but it updates frequently and they keep rearranging the menu layout, which is confusing. Overall still a great product.
I love the green card and the eco-friendly focus. The app features are way ahead of standard banks - auto-save, dual-pin, instant interest.
The pricing is steep (nearly 9 EUR/month for standard banking). The support is also a bit slow, taking up to 12 hours for a response.

The ultimate multi-currency banking app! I get multiple IBANs (NL, DE, FR, ES) in one account, which is amazing for living across borders.
