Apple Pay vs Google Wallet: what actually differs?

Apple Pay and Google Wallet do the same core job: they store the debit and credit cards you already have and let you pay by tapping your phone or watch. Neither charges you for that. Apple says it does not charge any fees when you pay with Apple Pay, in stores, online or in apps, and Google says Google Wallet is free of charge to all users. For most people the choice is made by the phone they own, Apple Pay on iPhone and Apple Watch, Google Wallet on Android.

The differences that do matter are where each one works, who decides what you pay abroad, and whether you can send money to friends. Here is what the official pages say on each point.

Paying abroad: the wallet is free, the card is not

Neither wallet converts currency itself. When you tap your phone in another country, the payment runs on the card you added, so the exchange rate and any foreign-transaction fee are your card issuer’s. Apple’s own advice is to ask your bank about fees for overseas use.

That makes the card inside the wallet the real decision. Adding a multi-currency card such as Wise or Revolut to Apple Pay or Google Wallet usually costs far less abroad than a bank card with a foreign-transaction fee, and the wallet adds nothing on top.

Worked example: a €100 dinner in Italy with a UK card

Apple Pay or Google Wallet: £0 from the wallet. Whatever your card charges for a euro payment applies exactly as if you had used the plastic card. If your bank charges, for example, a 2.99% foreign-transaction fee, you pay it either way; with a card that has no such fee, you pay only the exchange rate.

Sending money to friends

Apple Cash lets you send and receive money, but only in the 50 US states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico, and you must be 18 and a US resident (younger users can join through Apple Cash Family). Moving Apple Cash to your bank is free by standard transfer and usually takes 1 to 3 business days. Instant Transfer to an eligible debit card costs 1.7%, with a $0.25 minimum and a $25 maximum: $3.40 on $200, $17 on $1,000, and $25 on anything above about $1,470.

Google’s help page lists sending money to friends and family through Google Pay only in India and Singapore. In the UK, the eurozone and the US, Google Wallet is a payment and pass wallet, not a way to send money.

Country coverage

Apple’s list, updated on 27 October 2026, has 101 countries and regions: 56 in Europe, 16 in Latin America and the Caribbean, 13 in Asia-Pacific, 10 in the Middle East and India, 4 in Africa, and Canada and the United States. Google publishes its coverage as a country selector that shows, for each country, whether the Google Wallet app, tap to pay and the Google Wallet website are available.

Both cover the UK, Germany, France, Italy, Switzerland, the US and India. Turkey appears on neither list. Both lists describe where you can set up and use the wallet; whether a given card can be added is up to its issuer.
